Each year the United States Government grants 50,000 permanent resident cards to people from countries with historically low rates of immigration to the US. Green Card Lottery History
The United States of America Department of State administers on an annual basis the congressionally mandated Diversity Visa Lottery Program. The Department of State conducts this visa lottery based on United States law, specifically Section 203(c) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA). The Immigration and Nationality Act provides for a class of immigrants known as diversity visa immigrants, with visas made available to persons from countries with historically low rates of immigration to the United States of America. For the fiscal year 2026, 50,000 permanent resident cards will be available for successful applicants. A permanent resident card is popularly known as a Green Card due to it green color.
